Wow, most of my favorite tips are covered in previous posts. A few more:

o Exchange a $100 or so of the local currency before you leave, just so you have some in your pocket for cabs, tips, etc. Keep it in a pocket, not in your wallet.

o If you have any medical conditions, wear a medical alert bracelet or necklace. Make sure that you have your blood type somewhere on your person (Red Cross card, etc.).

o The fanny pack marks you as a tourist, but it is the ultimate carry all. Hard to steal or pickpocket, holds your camera, drugs, papers, gum, etc. Couldn't travel without it.

o Put at least one credit card in a separate place from your others, or when traveling with companions, spread them around amongst you.
