Honeywell Earns Status in China
January 7, 2005

China granted Honeywell International Inc. status as a "well known" trademark, making the U.S. technology conglomerate one of only four international companies to be so recognized in the Chinese market. Honeywell said the designation came about after the company sued Wuxi Honeywell Precision Manufacture Co. alleging improper use of the Honeywell name. The president of Honeywell China, Shane Tedjarati, said the well-known status will protect and strengthen the Honeywell brand in China. Honeywell, which has been operating in China since 1932, employs 4,000 staff in the country and has a local headquarters in Shanghai. Since joining the World Trade Organization in 2001, China has revised its patent, trademark and copyright laws to better accord with WTO rules. The regulations define well-known trademarks as marks "that are widely known to the relevant public in China and that enjoy a relatively high reputation."
