Yah... research is good, but now is definitely a good time to invest. Just on this site I've read numerous articles about "undervalued" stocks... and there are a lot of them out there right now. I believe that these lower stock prices are largely a result of fearful/cautious investors because of the "perceived" recession in the US right now and not as much a result of actual poor performance of corporations (you can form your own opinions by doing some brief research on 1st quarter financial statements which really don't support a major recession, in my opinion).

Anyway, I've been watching a number of stocks recommended by over the last 6 months or so and they definitely would be doing more for you than leaving that $1400 in a bank. It's definitely a little scary making those first stock purchases, but with a small amount of cash like that (which is about what I've invested so far as well) I think it's a good time to take the risk and learn. Especially since we're young... we have more time to recover if we do something stupid... :P
