Yes, I think e-reader is a generic name for books that are supplied electronically. Kindle is one of the best known brands but there are others. And most tablets, laptops, or desktops can be used to read those files. Smart phones probably too, but I'm sure some work better than others.

In addition to the books available for Kindle, Google has scanned in numerous classics (where copyrights have expired). https://books.google.com/bkshp?hl=en&tab=wp Google's books are available free.

I know nothing about what device is coming out Oct 11, but with holiday shopping not far off, you can bet the next generation of devices will be available soon.
