Yes, that is my experience too. My numbers are a bit out of date, but research scientists can expect to earn $80K or so as a senior scientist after 7 to 10 yrs of performance and growth. His manager can probably earn over $100K with bonus.

PhD scientists can probably earn $100K when they move into senior ranks.

Most employers prefer to fill those slots internally when possible. Otherwise, they will hire headhunters to find someone with exactly the right background and credentials for the job.
