Yesterday a FOX News program declared the fact that senior citizens were not rioting in the streets over the lack of a COLA this year was proof they were ready to see Social Security curtailed if not eliminated.

My 84 yr old mother would never riot(!), and she's also not a complainer, but she complained to me about the lack of COLA--along with evidence of the increase in her expenses despite all the cutbacks. Doesn't help that she's collecting less interest on fixed income, too.

In order to make ends meet, she's reduced her spending...gets hair & nails done less often, eats out less--buys premade food at the supermarket more, stopped taking expensive Nexiumm--eats smaller meals and early dinner to control GERD, stopped taking anti-bladder-accident medication--makes sure she uses the bathroom often, goes to fewer movies, hasn't traveled for years, shops at cheaper stores--Publix instead of Whole Foods, TJMaxx & Target instead of Belks & Dillards, stopped sending Christmas cards. My sibs and I take care of some expenses (dental bills, electronics, facials & massages--which she loves).

Having grown up during the Great Depression (born in 1926), and having friends helping support unemployed or in-debt children/grandchildren, she realizes she has it easy. But it would be easier with an SS COLA!
