Yoshida was reportedly a heavy smoker, which most likely contributed to the esophageal cancer.

Yoshida stepped down as plant chief in December 2011 after developing oesophageal cancer. He was a heavy smoker, and the cancer is thought to be unrelated to radiation exposure.
