You could also try attracting neighborhood cats. 1poorlady is feeding one occasionally. I think I related the story how it apparently beat the crap out of gopher and left it for us. Still alive, but not able to squirm much when I swept it up in a dust pan. I thought it was dead until I did that and it moved just a little bit, then gave up.

I'm sure she'd go after rats also if there were any around.
