You did make a bad decision. And you did not buy into a scam. You bought a house. It is a place to live and puts a roof over your head. Presumably that has positive value. If you were foolish enough to believe its value would always go up and never down and want to view it as an ATM, well, then that's just silly.

You can live with that and wait out the market for things to improve as they inevitably will. Or you can blame everyone else, and decide to act without integrity and re-neg on your bills and contractual obligations.

I am beginning to think that it is hazardous to your own interest to be moral.
People do not choose to be moral because it helps them to get over on everyone else. You do it because it makes you a mensch and a person of integrity.
