You may find information on the Footwear Industry from several sources:

NPD is one of the country's largest market research firms and covers the athletic and fashion footwear business. Their data comes from panel members, so it is often "suspect" as compared to scanner-based data typically found in consumer goods industrues (cost = $20,000 / year).

FMI (Footwear Market Insights) also provides a similar analysis of the Market (approx. $20,000 / year).

Packaged Facts (Kalorama Research)does a pretty good job at profiling the market and includes government sources (cost $2,000). This is probably thecheapest and most effective quick view of the market (and includes projections).

I have studied the U.S. athletic footwear market for several years and the market has stalled. US footwear unit volume has been flat at 1 billion pairs per year. The athletic market has reached saturation at $15 billion, with declining unit sales over the past few years.
