You may not be able to mix church and state on the City Hall lawn, but they are thoroughly mixed on private lawns this year.

Really? I wasn't aware that they were conducting government business on these people's front lawns. Could you tell us if it is the executive, legislative, or judicial branch at work there?

The displays show an embedded understanding of the close connection between America's religious heritage and its secular freedoms--and a determination, in the face of self-styled Islamic radicalism, to defend both.

"We will defend against self-styled Islamic radicalism (whatever that means) by rallying behind the cross and creating a self-styled Christian radicalism"

One could not help but be reminded of author Midge Decter's famous formulation: "Liberal parents, radical children."

So, which is it? Is it liberal parents that are creating radical children or is it people's insistence that you not be allowed to attempt to convert them within public facilities?

Could there be something worth learning from the military culture, which emphasizes such old-fashioned virtues as hard work, loyalty and individual initiative? Even Hollywood seems to be getting on the bandwagon, the new movie "Behind Enemy Lines"--stars the otherwise very liberal Gene Hackman as an American admiral who finally does the right thing and rescues "our boy."

So we are to believe that prior to this film, Mr. Hackman was lazy, unloyal, and didn't take initiative because he was a liberal?

America is the most religious nation in the industrial world

Since when?

But if you wonder why the Taliban theocracy folded like a cheap suit, while America once again triumphed, you need look no further than those private displays of faith and freedom in the front yards of your neighborhoods.

They got their butts kicked because we fund a more technologically sophisticated and well prepared military. They lost because we were more organized. They lost because we spend more on our military than they do. They lost because we have all the allies and they have none. They did not lose because your god is better than theirs.
