Your making a category fallacy. Human language is not math.

Of course not. Neither is The Republic but it stands up the rigors of logic.

You'd be happier if Jesus said, "Verily I say unto thee, the square root of 9 is 3" ?

Nope. But since Jesus is supposedly illuminating absolute truths, he'd have been able to do so without all the mud, fog, and inconsistencies. If the way to nirvana means loving god before everything else, the statement is "Love god before everything else" NOT "Hate your family."

His question to you is, "Who do you say I am?" That answer doesn't depend on what others think.

I think he's a fictional anthropomorphism of the rebirth of spring stolen from pagan beliefs that were rampant throughout the Mediterranean at the time, which were ruthlessly wiped out in the fourth century under the pogrom of "One God, one Lord, one faith, one church, one empire, one emperor."

What's left of the bible is the result of politics, not divinity. Modern Christianity got to the party way too late.
