Your overview sounds correct. E&P firms I've followed in the past would sometimes split out what out of those derivative gains were realized and unrealized. I'm not sure if they have to under GAAP rules. It may have been more of a courtesy/marketing thing since the company in particular I followed somewhat closely was getting large unrealized gains/losses every quarter due to so much hedging, and so wanted to add some clarity there.
