Z, when you purchase savings bonds, you can defer taxes on the earnings until the savings bonds are cashed in. At least I know you can with I Bonds. So in effect, it acts like a retirement account. I believe they are also exempt from state and local taxes. I have them as part of my emergency fund, but hope I don't have to use them until retirement. Good luck.
