Not generally fatal to healthy people, but the alleged** devastating birth defects in some manner accomplish the same thing by destroying the next generation. Though even in healthy adults there does appear to be a link to Guillain–Barré syndrome.

Florida Gov. Declares State of Emergency in Counties With Zika Virus

Mosquito-borne, and with so many dense population centers, transmission among people via mosquito is extremely easy. As has always been the case with pandemics. It's minor until you get large groups of people (cities), and especially large groups that travel to other large groups. Plague, small pox, typhus, etc. The cases in Florida are due to travelers to South America. A few mosquito bites in FL and it's loose there too. (Hence the "state of emergency".)
