---If bonds are free of federal tax does the income still show up as an addition to ones adjusted gross income on the 1040...just not taxed.--The Tax Free income line shows up on the 1040, and is used as income in calculating your Social Security Tax liability. So, if if you have no taxable income, you will pay tax on Social Security payments on Tax Free Income over the limit of (I believe) a $32,000 joint return.
