1. I do not want to be an owner-operator. When folks speak about trucking, they fail to mention the difference between a company driver and an owner/operator. At 55, I do not want to go into $100,000 worth of debt. If I owned my own rig I could get hired on tomorrow.

2. I have a Failure to Control citation from 12/10 when I hit some black ice and spun out while driving a cargo van. For a prospective company driver that is The Kiss of Death. Nobody wants to hire you while that is in your 3-year window.

And for some companies that window extends out to 10 years. For some others, it is a permanent stain on my record, never to be considered for a company driver position with them.

3. All trucking companies have hiring areas. If you find Bay City, MI on the map it is kinda out of the way. If I lived downstate, closer to Detroit, I could get hired on more easily.

4. Backing up is a challenge for me, so a trailer is not going to work out. I think I must have looked at every flatbed company in America. See above.
