I picked up 20 empty aluminum cans while on my tricycle ride today. That's almost a new record! Why do I do it? Because:a) It helps keep litter off our streets and property values up.b) Aluminum costs less to recycle than it costs to dig up and refine into pure metal than any other metal.c) I pass clear 50 gal. bags of the cans on to a lady who donates them to her church which adds them to the cans collected from parishioners and sells them to a recycler and does 'churchy' things with the money.Desert (cycling recycler) Dave
WTG Desert Dave! But please be careful. I've suspended my dumpster diving for cans because of Covid.
Thank you for recommending this post to our Best of feature.WTG Desert Dave! But please be careful. I've suspended my dumpster diving for cans because of Covid. Thanks, IIRC Covid can't survive in the air outside of a carrier (warm body) for more than a minute.A Covid virus, if it ever existed on a can, would be long dead by the time I came along to pick it up.Also, I'm old and lazy so I use my pick'em up stick https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn%3AANd9GcTysE...to grab'em and bag'em.After that the viruses are gunna have to dig their way through about a 1/16th of an inch of industrial strength clear plastic to get at me.By the way, an exemployee who bought the store from us dropped by the house yesterday with a covidvirus mask that they are selling to the GI's. It'll protect me from nothing (no face mask protects its wearer (if air gets in so you can breathe so do the viruses) ... but it does protect OTHER people from getting tiny dropletts of saliva or mucus on them if I should cough or sneeze near them.
A Covid virus, if it ever existed on a can, would be long dead by the time I came along to pick it up.It might be more accurate to say that the virus "has not been shown to survive..." etc., etc. Then you have to decide if you want to take the alpha or beta risk: That is, will you only be wary of dangers that have been shown to exist, or only accept as safe dangers that have been shown to not exist? I am not paranoid for myself, but with the quarantine closing things like daycare, my wife is providing occasional infant care to enable a first responder and a medical person to be able to go to work. Also, I may need to check in on my 90-year-old parents. So, I'm extra-careful for those to whom me contracting the virus could be passing along something extremely serious.
