4% is not only the safe withdrawal rate, but a low-hassle path to wealth.

Not so great for the retiree of 2000. It's been rough for them. I doubt anyone could have seen their portfolio drop to $350k (Feb 2009) and continue with the same withdrawal.

If they did, they're looking at an 11.6% withdrawal rate for 2021. Still, they have about 8 year's worth of withdrawals left. They'll likely make 30 years.
