2old says,

(Leaving my job is out of the question b/c then I'd never be able to FIRE)

But is it really worth it to spend 6 or 7 more years if you're really miserable?

I found myself in a similiar situation to you in the mid '90s. Like you my job was making me miserable with but I was still several years away from FIRE. I decided what I really needed at the time was simply to work a lot less. So asked for and got a part time schedule. Yes this meant that it took me a couple of years longer to get to FIRE--but it was sooo worth it.
