I don't completely understand the 'company match' concept on the 401K discussions.

Is it that the company matches say 6% up to a maximum?

OR

Or does it only match the first 6% the employee contributes?

As an example, in my husbands 401K the company matches 6% up to 20,000/yr. So if my husband contributes 10% of his salary which maxes his individual contribution for a year say 13,000, does the company match 6% of that 13,000 or only the first 6% of his contribution?

hope this makes sense to someone.

thanks

Lorna
