I would like to nominate Fractured Atlas Productions for TMF's charity drive.

Fractured Atlas is a community of artists and educators in New York City that focuses on finding and then nurturing on a long-term-basis young talent in the performing arts.

They have an educational outreach program that helps children as young as 8 to discover and develop independent creative voices, which can prove enormously valuable in building and maintaining self-esteem and self-worth. For older kids, the training becomes more serious, focusing on providing real world experience at their developing craft.

Fractured Atlas also produces and presents the work of several resident professional groups. These are young artists who are at that crucial stage in the development of their craft where know what they're doing but have not yet "made it big." Fractured Atlas helps them develop their work over an extended period of time, regularly brings it to the public, and teaches the artists about the business side of their professions: marketing, budgeting, fundraising, etc.

This all happens in a very communtity-based environment. The kids in the educational program pay their way through internships with the professional artists. Regular festivals, conferences, and events bring everyone together to share ideas: both creatively and about the treacherously difficult business of non-profit arts.

We can't underestimate the importance of the arts in a healthy society. But even more valuable is the opportunity to help someone develop his or her own unique voice in a culture that so often suppresses individuality and diversity.
