Subject:  401(k) choices?? Help! Date:  12/29/1999  8:52 PM

First I'll tell you the bad news. I have kept my money in a money market account for the last 9 years!!! I was saving for my son's college education.

Now the good news. He got into college without using any of the money, and has a very favorable mix of loans with school and the feds.

After reading the Fool's notes on investing in mutual funds, my question is this: There are 9 Vanguard funds from which I can choose to shift my 401(k) funds. Three are specifically named "Index" funds. Six others are variously labelled PRIMECAP and Growth and Growth and Income funds. (Administrative fees are less than 1% on all of them.) All of the funds are indexed against either S&P, Russell 2000 or one called Growth Market Composite Index.

The charts are pretty, all but one has outperformed the index it measures itself against over the last 10 years.

So many choices, so little time. Is there any way, other than a dart board, to make a decision?
