One thing--to get the RH characteristics, you don't have to buy the CD; you just need to know how to ftp or NFS or some other method. That said, average computer owner would probably like having the CD in hand rather than carting said computer over to the office after hours. Or even having to think of doing such a thing. The CD is convenience. That is the real feature RH is selling, IMO. However, once you know what you're doing you can upgrade remotely, say via ftp or NFS. So as people get smarter about this (although who knows if they want to spend the time, nobody really cares how Windows works when it is working) RH may not get as much upgrade business as a shareholder might hope for. On the other hand, Linux is as platform-independent as you can get in an OS, I have it running on a godawful Alpha-on-a-PC-style-motherboard, it runs on Macs, so the platform-independence may alleviate this education factor. |
