Take a photography class at your local community college. You can learn to develop your own pictures and use the school's equipment/chemicals. If you find you really like it -- I discovered that I enjoyed developing pictures more than taking them -- you can start your own dark room in a closet. There's some up-front cost, but it's a wonderful way to relax and express yourself artistically (for those of us who can't draw, sing, dance, etc.) Also, many photo clubs and community colleges let you use their facilities for a nominal fee.
