I do not think that with Direct Loans you lose your ability to get deferments/forbearances etc. when you consolidate. If your loan currently is in a deferment / forbearance, the consolidation of the loan creates a new loan and you have to re-apply for the deferment/forbearance that you were/are eligible for.
