"Rooted" means "beyond repair or saving" in Australia. Of a person, exhausted, unable to move, too ill to act. We do not "root" for a team. We barrack for a team. And while we are talking about these things, I am not a fan of "free speech" without acknowledgement of a responsibility to restrain such speech to avoid hurt or untruth. America has much to answer for on this front; and its all-too-vocal extremists (right-wing, fundamentalist, racist) deserve condemnation. |
