By Sue Townsend.

In 1999, the Republican party swept Parliament. The first thing the new Prime Minister, Jack Barker, ordered was the elimination of the monarchy. The Royal Family was shipped out of Buckingham Palace to a housing project called Hellibore Close, called Hell Close by the inhabitants. Some adjust to being poor welfare recipients better than others, but the adjustments are hard and surprising even to them.

This is a funny social satire that is, in hindsight, a little creepy. Princess Diana, Princess Margaret and the Queen Mother are all there. What's really creepy is the part in the book where the Queen Mother dies and is given a burial by her Hell Close neighbors. I just finished that part and turned on the news to hear... the Queen Mother died.

I recommend this book.
