I feel that "asset allocation" is a good idea.

Decide what percentage of your assets should be in each different class: stocks, bonds, real estate, cash and what domestic/international mix you want. Then each year, adjust your portfolio to match that mix.

What mix you choose depends on your goals and risk tolerance.
