can anyone explain what is a "W8" engine?

apparently something 'new' from volkswagen...
i did some googling, but only found

>> the VW said -like a V8 only more compact

and another site -- like two V4's stuck together in a W shape..

now (looking down on engine)

regular V8 something like
    O  |  O
    O  |  O
    O  |  O
    O  |  O

so two V4's looking like W would be
    O | O O | O
    O | O O | O

but seems (to me) that would require two Cranks (two flywheels?),
2x camshafts...... and so, be not that much smaller, but
heavier and more complicated than the V8


???
