While browsing at Borders, I picked up and read the first few pages of “Night Watch,” which is the latest in the Discworld series written by Terry Pratchett. I found it funny and wanted to read more. However, I'm a firm believer in reading a series in order. Night Watch is book 27 in the series. My heart quailed at the thought of having to first read the previous 26 books, especially since I lost interest halfway through “The Colour of Magic,” which is the first in the series. The advice of friends that I went whimpering to was, "Don't be an idiot, just read the damn book."

Amazon and a Pratchett fan called swiven came to my rescue. Swiven explained that the Discworld series has parallel story lines, put the books in story line order and rated them. May the gods of Ankh-Morpork bless him. This meant I had only five books to read before getting to Night Watch. I'm now on the fourth book of the Sam Vines storyline, “Jingo”. Pratchett's a funny writer and I've enjoyed the books. It's good mind candy. My only beef is that he doesn't have more of Lady Sybil in the later books.
