How many people are combining one partner working and the other staying home?

In my particular case, me wife and I are both Lieutenants in the US Navy. That's equivalent to Captain in the other services. We have no kids, just two dogs. We have about 12 years to till retirement. Probably we would retire as Commanders (Lieutenant Colonel). Our retirement would be about equal to our pay right now and it should be inflation adjusted.

The fly in the ointment is this: Out of 8 years of service, we have spent about 3 years and 6 months apart for training or deployments. We are seriously talking about one of us becoming a stay at home spouse. Because of my nuclear training and being a ship driver, I make about $32K more than she does annually. This is bonus money and does not count for our pension calculation. We are currently saving about 35% of our gross pay and there are several areas where we could cut back to save more. Our current living expenses (housing, utilities, gas, and food) are within one of our paychecks.

The question I have is: What factors went into the decision to have a stay at home spouse?
