hemi refers to the design of the cylinder head. chrysler developed the "hemi" engine in the late 50s and set multiple speed records with it and was very successful racing both at the dragstrop and nascar. i believe the engine was actually banned by nascar in the early 70s because it was too fast. i do not know how the new "hemi" engine compares to the old one.
