What you object to is that the scoring system rates the performance as the sum of its parts rather than looking at the whole.

That's true, but it's ice skating, not ice jumping. You know what men's ice skating reminds me of. Men's gymnastics floor routine. It's great to see all the spectacular tricks, but something has to tie them all together.

The scoring system favors the technical over the composition

I'm under the impression that both have equal rate, you can be awarded up to 100 points for each. Is that not right? Or is it just that the technical stuff is easier to rate and score than the artistic portion?
