I think what colleges look at is whether a student is challenging themselves. If they go to an academically aggressive school but take easy courses, it won't look as good as someone who tries the advanced classes. Even if they do not excel in those classes. But you have to be careful to not seem like you are just trying to pad your academic resume.

Who thinks admissions offices look for kids who are passionate about the things in which they are involved...
