Don't forget that plenty of people "unretire" out of boredom more than out of financial need.

Mel Karmazan was on Charlie Rose last night. He is now running Sirius Satellite radio. He had been in on the merger of CBS and Viacom and was doing great, but found himself on the outs.

He said he decided it was time to do something else when he found himself helping his wife fold sheets.

Especially for business executives, retirement can be a major change that requires some adjustment. Going in stages works better for many. That gives you more time to decide how you will spend your time. Temping. Working part time are standard ways to do this. Quitting cold turkey is tough on some.

Of course others decide to go back to work because expenses turn out to be higher than expected or because of reversals in their investments. There is nothing like building in a safety factor to cover for the unexpected.
