Did you think about my thought experiment at all? Yes, but I haven't had much time (or knowledge) to contribute much. Thought experiment: You advance an argument. For everything you say in the argument, I ask 'why this?' You tell me 'because...' until you're out of 'becauses' and into 'I don't know.' Isn't your argument therefore determined by your 'becauses' - the causes - and possibly some randomness (no 'because' or 'I don't know')? If I want to have a rational discussion with you, then I don't see how my responses can be non-rational (ie determined). Your examples of material entities (like computers) providing rational answers to problems doesn't work for me, because they were programmed by rational minds. Would you chose a computer designed and programmed by a chimp, if you could get one made by a human? I don't see how you can claim your view of the materialistic nature of thought is a rational position, or that you believe it for good reasons, or because of the evidence, because it seems to me to be self-refuting. This is because such a materialistic reality seems (again to me) to deny the possibility of rationality.
