I think the main drawback of ETFs is the transaction costs. So buy and hold should be okay. If I were to use ETFs, I would buy broad range funds like total stock market and total bond market. I would not get involved with narrow sectors because that would involve too many funds and then rebalancing could become more costly than I would like. If I were to rebalance only between total stock and total bond to keep a target allocation, I think I could get away with rebalancing less often, especially if I used fairly broad rebalancing bands like maybe 10% or even higher.
