Lots of very savvy technical people can produce a wonderful looking web site; but it takes someone who monitors it, takes down old content, and puts up fresh content on a continual basis to make a *good* web site. The person who makes the site tick doesn't have to be a technical wizard; he or she just needs to know enough to put up and take down content, and needs to be steady enough to stay on top of it.

Amen. If you want a web site that sells things, you need someone who knows about selling to design it. You'll probably get better results from a graphic artist or marketing person than a computer geek.

Find a web site that you like from a business that you know and find out who did it. Hire them. (It's easier to hire someone whose design tastes are similar to your own than to try to force someone to change their style to make you happy.) Then, make sure you budget for them to update it as frequently as you're able to pay for, be it weekly, monthly, or quarterly.
