IBM is my "alma matter." That's where I learned about computers and IT. When I was there it was still run by Tom Watson Jr. who was followed by a long string of "professional" but less capable CEOs until they finally had to fire John Akers. Akers was followed by Lou Gerstner from McKinsey and Company, the pre-eminent management consulting firm. He did a great job turning IBM around. IBM remains a leading business oriented technology company even as technology moves towards the masses in the form of tablets and smart phones. Now smaller than the retail oriented companies, IBM remains a great company.

On January 1, the job of CEO is passing to Ginni Rometty. I liked the video in the following interview:

I sure hope she does a better job that a few recent lady CEOs at other high tech outfits. ;)
