Is a state return filed for the state of residence of the heirs? Both heirs live in California. My father lived in a different state.

I wanted to believe that a state tax return for my father's state would need to be filed. Everything the H&R Block software is doing doesn't agree with that belief: you can create as many state returns as needed, creating a proper return for California and a zero return for my father's state. I know not to unconditionally accept what software generates, but I have also learned to accept that my view of reality can be wrong.
