IE self-employed vs. getting a real job
Both are fine. Income is the core thing, not self-employment vs. W2 employment. Me, I've been self-employed for 8 years, and I find it works great for me.

Don't knock working for yourself - it's a good gig, and almost no one is wildly successful right out of the gate. You have to pay your dues and put in the time. The important things about SE are: 1) Always, but ALWAYS, set aside taxes first and pay quarterly taxes; 2) Track your P&L diligently to know if you are actually making profit or not and how much; 3) Be flexible and willing to make compromises (time/schedule/expectations, but not ethics - ever) to get in doors and get exposure; 4) Honor relationships and oblige long-time clients.
