Are you surprised that such a small (population-wise) and otherwise undistinguished state as OR has two, count 'em, two teams in the top 15? UO is now rated #6 and OSU is #15. At least that's what I think I heard on some TV show the other night.

I don't know why UO has the duck mascot. Maybe there are more ducks down in Eugene, but you just don't see very many around here. There are lots of geese, though. Sometimes there are thousands strewn along the waterfront park that stretches for a mile or two beside the mighty Willamette. They make the grass an univiting place for a picnic. It's my little goose poop, you don't know what I got. But what ducks there are don't actually live in OR, do they? I thought they just stop for a rest while migrating. I like Oregon Geese as a team name better than Ducks. Geese are more aggressive, the way football players should be. You know when you've been pecked by one.

On the other hand, there really are beavers in the mountains and forests, so OSU is on solid ground. Shifting to the pro teams now, I'm still trying to think of a name for Chicago that's based in reality, since there are about as many bears in Chicago as there are Bengal tigers in Cincinnati. What about the Chicago O'Learys? The Chicago Corrupt Aldermen? The possibilities are endless.
