Have been thinking of becoming a Registered Tax Return Preparer as a part time business and wondering if anybody with actual experience on the board can share the pro and cons?

Clients. I would like to address this one specifically - slightly different from what others might. I started my tax business in 1986 as a part time business. I took classes - studied - advertised - and I was able to get a total of 12 clients the first year. Not quite what I had planned on.

In all the years I have been doing taxes this is my observation. Why would someone leave their current preparer (or stop doing their own taxes) and come to you? Unless the current preparer stops doing taxes, prices himself / herself out of business / screws up or does something else to make them want to change most people won't.

Other item would consider - how many clients will it take to "break even"?
