Someone on Ancestry, with whom I share some ancestors, used the word "née" to indicate a woman's maiden name, which is uncertain. So the née is to indicate a kind of placeholder.

Several other researchers, who apparently haven't seen the word before, have decided the woman's maiden name is Knee.
