The great Eddy Merckx, when asked the secret to his blazing bike speed, said, "Ride lots."

Todd Combs, who made $50 million choosing stocks for Berkshire Hathaway (BRK) in 2012, might answer the same question, "Read lots."

Combs, as we learn in this article, sometimes pores over as many as 1,000 pages a day, an idea he got from Warren Buffett many years ago when the BRK chairman spoke to Columbia B School students, including Combs.

Buffett, in response to a question, said he reads 500 pages a day.

"That's how knowledge works. It builds up, like compound interest. All of you can do it, but I guarantee not many of you will."
