I can give you a real life example over that time stretch. I’ve been a shareholder since those days –

If I might ask, what brought you to buy the shares back then? (sorry if you've talked about this and I missed it)
It was pretty far off the radar at the time.

One interesting viewpoint is that it doesn't really matter all that much.
Whether the reason was prophetic, merely good, bad or random, the largest
part of your long run success would appear to have been letting it ride.
Imagine having bought a dozen firms with good long run prospects, and
just keeping them all permanently, no rebalancing. Most would be duds.
After the first decade or two essentially all the money is riding on the best ones.
