Son (now, 70): "And out of all the things a father in 1959 could have told his gay son, my father tells me to be proud of myself and not sneak."

"He knew where I was headed. And he knew that making me feel bad about it in any way was the wrong thing to do," he adds. "I had the patron saint of dads for sissies, and no, I didn't know at the time, but I know it now."

That certainly was very good of your dad in those days. So many of us didn't have that. My parents either didn't know, or they chose to ignore the signs, and even if they knew, they were too conservative to be as accepting of me. I was 42 before I came out, 43 before I told them. They said they couldn't "condone" it, but I was their son and they loved me. That was about the best I could have expected of them.
