INTRO Here's my semi-annual exercise to see if I remember why I own the stocks I own, and so I can check back and see if their stories have changed. I include the economy and markets to check my perception of the bigger picture. I post in case it helps others too.

Economy & Markets
Impressive. The economy and the markets continue to recover nicely from their election jitters. The Great Recession hangover is over, at least for the major financial institutions and many people. Millions continue to be unemployed, are struggling with health care, and trying to find affordable housing. The bifurcation of the country, politics, and the economy continue. Haves versus have-nots has not gone away - and more folks are likely to consider themselves haves, even if the fundamentals of their savings, wage grow, and retirement plans may be less than needed.

Classic calls for caution about bubbles are surfacing. Political uncertainties continue. The hacks that are attacking infrastructures and ransoming information could easily be extended to more central and vital services. Until something triggers those, they will only be cautions, not actions.

Other accelerating effects are: automation increasing profits and decreasing jobs, commodity price spirals as renewable energy grows, and a growing upset in immigration and refugees.

Guessing which way everything is going to go is only a guess because the system is chaotic. In the meantime, the best bet is for trends to continue - until they suddenly don't. While that's always been the case, current catalysts are more likely to be abrupt and unpredictable. Singularities happen. Stay tuned, and be ready to adapt.
