The kidneys and the lungs are the only major organs with such a combination of importance and failure rate that we have two of them. But there are quite a number of organs major and minor, and not a few other body parts, such that if they shut down then before long everything else shuts down too. (Your rectal muscles potentially have two failure modes. One is rather unpleasant and unsanitary. The other is eventually fatal if left untreated.) |
